What is Shopify packing slip generator?

Orderline’s Packing Slip Studio is a free visual designer for Shopify’s native packing slip templates. It offers four layouts, A4 and US Letter formats, and editable branding and product details. The tool generates Liquid template code you install in Shopify; it does not connect to your store or print orders itself.

Four free Shopify packing slip templates

Start with a layout that suits the way you pack. Every template can be customized before you export its code.

Minimal

An airy layout with understated rules. Keep the focus on the products, quantities, and shipping details.

Classic

A centered letterhead with traditional double rules. Give your packing slip a familiar, structured appearance.

Bold

Strong accent bars and prominent typography. Bring your brand color into the document and make section headings stand out.

Photo

An image-first layout designed to start each line item on a new printed page. Keep the order number and recipient details with each item’s information. Useful when your team needs a larger product reference.

Print note: The Photo preview shows stacked item sections. Final page breaks depend on Shopify’s renderer and your print settings.

Which packing slip template is best for your Shopify store?

The best packing slip template is one your team can read, your printer can reproduce, and your Shopify workflow can populate correctly. Choose by item detail and paper size before choosing colors. A branded preview is useful, but a test with a long, personalized order is more revealing.

What you needStart withCheck before using it
A simple item listMinimalProduct names, variants, SKUs, and quantities remain readable
A traditional branded documentClassicThe centered header leaves enough room for item details
Prominent section headingsBoldText and accent colors remain legible on your printer
Larger product references for custom itemsPhotoEach line item starts on a new page; long details may need extra space

All four layouts support A4 and US Letter. None is a 4×6 thermal template.

What should a Shopify packing slip include?

A useful Shopify packing slip identifies the order, recipient, items, and quantities in the shipment. Add variants and SKUs to distinguish similar products. For personalized items, include the available customer-selected options. Branding and a thank-you message can support the document, but should not crowd out the information needed to pack it.

InformationWhat these templates provide
Order referenceShopify order number and order date
RecipientAvailable shipping address; optional billing address and phone
ItemsProduct titles, variants, and shipment quantities
IdentificationOptional SKUs, product images, and vendor names
PersonalizationOptional non-empty, customer-facing line-item properties; underscore-prefixed properties are excluded
Store contactAvailable store address, email, and domain when store details are enabled
Customer instructionsOptional order notes and an editable footer for a short support or returns message

The generated templates do not include product prices, payment totals, or tax calculations. Use an invoice when you need a financial document. This tool does not generate return authorizations, postage labels, or customs documents.

Customize the details your packing team needs

A packing slip should help your team identify the right items and see the instructions that belong with them. Choose which supported fields appear without editing the template code by hand.

  • Add your branding: Set a store name, use a Shopify-hosted logo, and choose an accent color.
  • Adjust the layout: Choose A4 or US Letter, switch fonts, and adjust text size and spacing.
  • Show product details: Toggle product images, SKUs, and vendor names.
  • Include personalizations: Display customer-facing line-item properties, such as engraving text or selected options, when available in the order data.
  • Choose address details: Show or hide the billing address, customer phone, and store details.
  • Include order notes: Make available customer instructions visible on the packing slip.
  • Write your own message: Edit the document title, thank-you message, and footer note.

For custom-product sellers, personalization details are especially useful. An item name alone may not tell your team which initials to engrave or which option the customer chose. Those details can appear alongside the product when they are stored as supported line-item properties.

Free Shopify packing slip template download: what do you get?

Download packing-slip.liquid, a reusable template containing HTML, CSS, and Shopify Liquid. This is not a blank Excel worksheet or a completed PDF. Install the code in Shopify’s native packing slip editor, then let Shopify populate the available order and shipment details when you print.

Native Shopify, Orderline, spreadsheet, or printing app?

These are different jobs, not competing versions of the same file. Use the one that matches how your team actually packs and prints.

Use thisWhen it helpsWhat it is for
Shopify native packing slip (this designer)You print packing slips from Shopify Admin and want Shopify to fill in the order and shipment automatically. One reusable Liquid template for A4 or US Letter. Staff print from the order or fulfillment screen. No extra app.
Orderline packing slipsYou want to add custom fields to your packing slips from metafields or custom attributes and print them in bulk without having to deal with code from a unified orders view.An A4 PDF from Orderline that acts as production manifest for your staff to see customer selected options and notes on the order.
Spreadsheet, such as Fulfyld’s XLSX templateYou prepare packing lists by hand, share a file with a warehouse, or work outside Shopify’s print flow.A document you type into. Shopify will not fill it from orders. An XLSX file cannot be pasted into Shopify’s packing slip editor.
A document app, such as Order Printer or Order Printer ProYou need invoices, pick lists, emailed PDFs, 4×6 or thermal layouts, translations, or print rules the native editor does not cover.A separate template system with its own variables and features. Liquid from this page is for Shopify’s native editor, not a drop-in for those apps.

You can use more than one of these. A native packing slip for customer shipments does not stop you from printing Orderline slips for production, keeping a spreadsheet for a 3PL, or using a printing app for invoices.

Get free Shopify packing slip template code

Packing Slip Studio generates the HTML, CSS, and Liquid for your chosen design. Copy the complete template or download it as packing-slip.liquid. You design the layout once; Shopify supplies the available order and shipment information when the installed template is used.

The exported code does not contain the sample customer or sample order shown in the preview.

Important: This code is intended for the native packing slip template under Shopify’s Shipping and delivery settings. Do not assume it will work unchanged in Shopify Order Printer, Order Printer Pro, or another printing app.

How to edit your Shopify packing slip template

To use your design, replace the code in Shopify’s native packing slip editor with the template generated here. Back up your current template first, then preview the new layout before saving it.

  1. Create your design. Choose a preset, select A4 or US Letter, and customize the branding and fields.
  2. Check the sample previews. Review a standard order, partial shipment, missing details, and a long order.
  3. Copy the template. Select Get template, enter your email, then copy the generated Liquid code. You can also download a backup.
  4. Open Shopify’s editor. In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Shipping and delivery → Documents → Templates → packing slip. Signed-in merchants can open https://admin.shopify.com/settings/shipping/templates, then choose packing slip. Open packing slip templates
  5. Back up and replace the code. Save a copy of your existing template before pasting the new one.
  6. Preview, save, and test-print. Check product details, addresses, images, and page breaks before using the design for customer shipments.

Shopify documents this editor location in its guide to customizing packing slips. If you are already signed in, the templates link opens Documents → Templates for your store. Add your yourstore.myshopify.com address in Get template when you want a link to a specific store. Then choose packing slip.

Logo tip: Upload your logo in Shopify admin → Content → Files, then use its Shopify CDN URL in the designer. This tool accepts HTTPS logo URLs hosted on cdn.shopify.com or cdn.myshopify.com.

Preview more than a perfect order

Use the built-in sample scenarios to inspect how your design handles different order shapes before you install it. These previews help you spot crowded layouts and missing information; they do not replace a real test in Shopify.

Preview scenarioWhat to check
Standard orderBranding, item details, and overall readability
Partial shipmentShipped quantities and the incomplete-shipment notice
Missing detailsLayout when optional information is unavailable
Long order with 28 itemsDense item lists, spacing, and content flow

Your design settings are saved in your browser so you can return to your work on the same browser. Clearing browser storage can remove those settings.

Troubleshooting Shopify packing slip layout problems: overlapping text and page breaks

If product rows print over a footer, inspect the template layout and print settings rather than assuming the order data is wrong. Fixed-position footers, fixed-height containers, oversized content, and paper-size mismatches are possible causes. The exact fix depends on the template; this designer does not diagnose or repair existing code.

A merchant in this Shopify packing slip layout discussion reported that orders with three or more items overlapped the text at the bottom of a US Letter slip. They resorted to manually recreating the documents. That is one reported experience, not proof that all Shopify templates have the problem.

Check a long order before relying on a new layout

  1. Match the paper size. Select A4 or US Letter in both the designer and the print workflow.
  2. Test realistic content. Include several items, long product names, personalization details, and your actual footer message.
  3. Keep the document readable. Shorten promotional footer copy or reduce excess spacing before shrinking all the text.
  4. Check Shopify’s output. Review every page in Shopify’s preview and test-print on the printer you will use.
  5. Keep a rollback copy. If the replacement does not print correctly, restore your saved template while you investigate.

The Studio’s standard layouts place the footer after the item list in normal document flow, rather than pinning it over the page content. Their CSS also requests that item rows stay together. Those choices do not guarantee identical pagination across renderers, and a row taller than a page still needs special attention.

The built-in 28-item preview helps you inspect content flow. It is not proof that your real order will fit on a particular number of printed pages.

How do these templates handle partial shipments?

The generated template reads Shopify’s line_items_in_shipment and uses shipment quantities. When Shopify indicates that the shipment excludes some order items, the template displays an incomplete-shipment notice. In the standard layouts, an item shipping in a smaller quantity can display “1 of 3” rather than the full ordered quantity alone.

A shipment and a physical box are not necessarily the same thing. The designer does not allocate products to boxes or create “Package 1 of 2” labels. If one shipment uses several boxes, verify each box’s contents separately instead of assuming the template knows how you packed it.

Frequently asked questions

Are these Shopify packing slip templates free?

Yes. You can customize the four templates, preview sample orders, and copy or download the generated code for free. We ask for an email before you copy the code. You do not need an Orderline subscription or a Shopify login to use the designer. Installing the template for store orders requires access to your Shopify admin.

Do I need to know Liquid to edit my packing slip?

No. The visual controls generate the template code for you. You still need to copy that code into Shopify’s packing slip editor. Keep a backup of your existing template and check Shopify’s preview before saving your changes.

What is a Shopify packing slip?

A Shopify packing slip is a document included with a shipment that lists its contents. It can include product names, quantities, SKUs, and addresses. It helps the packing team check the shipment and gives the customer a record of what is inside. See Shopify’s packing slip guide: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/managing-orders/printing-orders/packing-slips

Can I create a Shopify packing slip in 4×6 format?

Not with the current version of this tool. Packing Slip Studio supports A4 and US Letter only. A 4×6 thermal packing slip needs a layout designed and tested for that paper size. Shrinking an A4 or Letter design can make text too small or cut off content.

Which printer can I use for these packing slips?

Use a printer that supports the A4 or US Letter size selected in your template. Install the template and print through Shopify, then check the paper size, scaling, margins, and page breaks. This designer does not connect to printers or provide a 4×6 thermal layout.

Do I need a Shopify packing slip app?

You do not need an additional printing app to use these templates in Shopify’s native packing slip editor. Shopify supports individual and bulk packing-slip printing. Use Orderline if you also need a production orders list with images and customizations, and packing slips printed from that same view. Orderline packing slips are a separate PDF, not this Liquid template.

Does the code work with Shopify Order Printer?

The generated code is built for Shopify’s native packing slip editor, not Shopify Order Printer. These environments can expose different data and use different template conventions. Use the installation steps on this page rather than pasting the code into another app without adapting and testing it.

Can I include engraving text and other personalization details?

Yes, when those details are available as customer-facing line-item properties in Shopify’s packing slip data. Turn on personalizations in the designer. Information stored only in an external app or an unsupported metafield will not appear automatically. Test an actual personalized order in Shopify to confirm the output.

Will the preview show my real Shopify orders?

No. The designer uses sample orders and does not connect to your store. After you install the template, Shopify uses the available data from your real orders and shipments. Sample customer names, addresses, and products are not included in the exported template code.

Can I download a packing slip PDF?

The tool downloads a Liquid template file, not a finished order PDF. Install the template in Shopify to generate packing slips for real orders. If your browser or operating system provides a Save as PDF option in the print workflow, you can use it there.

Is a packing slip the same as a shipping label or invoice?

No. A packing slip lists what is inside a shipment. A shipping label contains information used to route and deliver the package. An invoice records charges and payment information. This tool creates packing slip templates, not postage labels or invoice templates.

Need to add custom fields to your packing slips?

See every customization, then print from that view

This page designs Shopify’s native packing slip. Orderline is the production queue for those orders: line items, images, and personalization details in one orders view, without opening each Shopify order.

From that same list you print customizable packing slips as A4 PDFs. Extra fields such as delivery date or card message come from columns you already use. Those slips are staff production sheets, not the Liquid template generated here.

Packing Slip Studio is a standalone free tool. The generated Liquid is for Shopify’s native packing slip editor, not for import into Orderline.
